Aunt Kay

My great Aunt Kay, the last Moffat of her generation, passed away last night. Her 95th birthday is on Monday. Dad and Karen and I drove up to visit her last weekend. Pretty much all our Thanksgiving recipes come from Aunt Kay; as kids, we went up to her house for Thanksgiving a lot. Clarke and I have stopped by to visit her on almost every one of our post-Christmas-get-out-of-town winter camping trips. We even slept on her floor on the first night of our first ever trip. She was always so sharp and quick-witted when we’d sit and talk with her, it was only her body that was failing her. She made it to my bridal shower and our wedding in 2006 and Paula’s shower and wedding last year. Her daughters have done an amazing job making sure she is comfortable. She’s back with Uncle Don now and I know that makes her happy.

Adventures in Peaches

When Clarke and I bought our home, this scraggly peach tree came with it. We didn’t think it would survive our first few months in the house but Clarke and his mom trimmed it back for the winter. But come summer, lo and behold a bounty of peaches were growing in our backyard! The first summer we were novice peach farmers and lost many to the bugs and birds and critters and compost pile. This summer, my cooking partner Jen offered to help me make peach preserves from her family’s recipe. The peaches began to drop in earnest last week and after Judy came up and picked what she could use, I set to rescuing the remaining peaches before they fell victim to the peach vandals again this year.

We set to peel that pile of peaches (yes, we used them all!) with the advice of my favorite food blog, Our Best Bites and their timely tutorial on peeling peaches. Four cups of peaches into a crumbly-topped cobbler:

There isn't an uneaten shot of the cobbler, whoops

And the remaining 20 (!) cups of peaches (and 15 cups of sugar) into the pot for peach preserves.

After some cooking and much stirring, we had a very full pot of boiling peaches which thankfully boiled down quite a bit before we poured them into the jars.

Um, we don't have enough jars for this

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part Two

The final Harry Potter movie, such a bittersweet event. Not quite as overwhelming as finishing the final book, but still emotional. Jen, Scully and I decided we needed shirts to commemorate the final midnight screening (cause, let’s face it, I’m not doing that again). We gathered at Craft Central (my place) with our other Potterites, Erica and Bethany, for a day of Harry Potter crafting and came up with these beauties:

Jen Bethany Erica Caitlin Stef

The back of each shirt had this on it:
We stuck with Harry until the very end

That’s my Gryffindor scarf and movie ticket, taken at 3am when I got home. Needless to say, I was a zombie at work the next day, but it was so worth it. The movie was great!! It picked up right where Part One left off without wasting any time. Of course, this means that if you haven’t seen Part One, or read the books, this really isn’t a movie for you. Comparing the movie to the book (something you should never do) was a bit disappointing, as usual. I was surprised at how much they cut out or glossed over since they had a full-length movie to cover 1/3 of the book; all in the name of big box office monies. The movie was very exciting and entertaining. And I managed to make it through the whole movie without a potty break. Baby Girl was very excited and kept wiggling around (I’ve only just been able to feel her move lately, that’s an experience!).

It’s a Girl!

We had our anatomy ultrasound done last week and decided to find out our baby’s sex. Initially, I didn’t want to find out the sex until the birth. I’d always liked the idea of “it’s a boy!” or “it’s a girl!” when the baby is born. Clarke wasn’t too sure about that when I mentioned it to him in the beginning. I think his words were “so much is going to be a surprise, can’t we know one thing?” So we went back and forth about it for a while, and got way too many opinions from other people. Everyone has a strong opinion about it. After a while, I was starting to like the idea of knowing early (I’m a planner and it really appealed to that part of me) and of course Clarke suddenly liked the idea of waiting. The one bit of advice that I got that really made a lot of sense was from Clarke’s brother who didn’t find out with his first kid and did find out for his second kid…as the parents, on the day the baby is born, the last thing you’re worried about is the baby’s sex, he said it’s more like “oh my god, it’s a baby!!” so it might be more exciting for everyone else to find out the sex on the birth day that it is for the new parents. Clarke and I agonize and analyze and debate over every decision (even before baby). Finally, the night before our appointment, I decided I was fine knowing or not knowing but I wanted a decision made before we went to the doctor. I asked Clarke what he really wanted. He said he wanted to know, that it might help make it more real for him (because it’s already very real for me). Of course, now that we found out it’s a girl, he’s even more worried. :)

Family Vacation at Lake Powell

The Moffat Girls

The Moffat Girls

Lake Powell trips used to be a fairly regular occasion for us as kids, but now that we’re all older and busier, we go several years between trips. Our last trip was in 2004 so the cousins had been in discussion for a while about wanting to make another trip. Most of us were able to attend…Dad, Karen, me, Paula, Paula’s Scott, Nate (and friend Mark), Meagan, Pearce, Jennica (and friend Bailey), Uncle Scott, Erin, McKenzie, Ledger, Aunt Pammy, Uncle Rick, Skyler and his girlfriend Carolina. And Erin’s new puppy Ralph.

That’s eighteen and a half people and one dog. Surprisingly, the houseboat wasn’t too crowded, although there were several tents on the shore for sleeping.

The weather was great, very warm, which requires lots of water time. We had all sorts of toys…jet skis, wakeboarding, tube-ing (none of those for me though), floating rafts and I brought my SUP.

We had a campfire every night (except that last one), launched fireworks, played music and invented peanut butter s’mores.

The houseboat was huge compared to any we’ve ever had before. There were four “bedrooms”, two that had doors, two that were down a few stairs in steerage. And best of all, two bathrooms! I opted to sleep indoors (in steerage) to be closer to the bathroom (in case you’re keeping track, I’m 18 weeks pregnant). I missed falling asleep under the stars but was glad not to have to walk down the steep stairs from the roof in the middle of the night.

Houseboat M 22

The majority of the trip was pretty uneventful…swimming, floating, playing, reading, sleeping. The last 48 hours however were quite an adventure. Paula and her Scott, Skyler, Carolina, and Rick were leaving on Friday so they took Uncle Scott’s boat in to the marina loaded down with their gear. Jennica, Pearce and Mark went along to return the jet skis. The rest of us were on the houseboat as we slowly treked to our final site closer to the marina (to make for a quick departure on Saturday). It was very windy and very crowded in the main channel. One of the big tour boats camp roaring past and sent huge waves coming at our houseboat from the side. Those of us napping upstairs (Nate, Bailey, Erin, Meagan and I) were rolled off our of sleeping pads and lounge chairs. As we were scrambling around to collect anything that was loose up top, we heard lots of slamming and a huge crash from inside the houseboat and then Dad’s yelling. We went downstairs (still rocking side to side) to discover almost all the houseboat-supplied dishes smashed on the floor. Who puts ceramic dishes on a boat!? Thankfully, no one was in the kitchen when the latch came loose and all the dishes slid out. McKenzie had just picked up Ralphie and was in the hallway and Karen was up front near Dad. We put on our shoes and got to work picking up the thousands of shattered pieces. Ledger slept through the entire process in the back bedroom.

But the adventure was far from over. The wind continued to pick up as we tried to find a sheltered area to anchor for the night. We pulled into a crowded cove and got the houseboat stuck in the mud while still managing to twist sideways as the wind blew us around. The kids that were still on the houseboat (Erin, Nate, Meagan, Bailey) jumped off, found a few nice neighbors and pushed the houseboat out of the mud and then had to swim to catch up to us. We finally found a better spot in the same cove but protected from the wind by the rock walls. Eventually, Uncle Scott returned with Jennica, Pearce and Mark that evening and the wind finally died down.

Beautiful and peaceful after the wind died down

Saturday morning was mercifully calm as we packed up and headed to the marina. We loaded up our cars and headed into Page for lunch before going our separate ways. It was easy going until about 5pm when one of the tires on the Expedition blew out. Karen, Dad, Pearce and I were in the car and Karen was able to pull over quickly and pretty seamlessly. Meagan, Jennica and Bailey were following us and joined us on the side of the road. We had no working spare since the tire that blew was the spare that had been put into use the day before after discovering a flat tire while returning the jet skis. Instead of all of us waiting for AAA, all of us kids piled into Meagan’s car and drove the 10 miles to Hurricane in search of a tire place. At 5pm on a Saturday. In Utah. Needless to say, everything was closed (and would be until Monday) until we found the WalMart at the far end of town. I’ve never been so glad to see a WalMart. The tires got replaced and we drove the remaining hour to the Virgin River Hotel and Casino in Mesquite, NV.

We headed out of Mesquite early to beat the Sunday Vegas traffic and made it home without any further chaos.

Yosemite in Springtime

Our wonderful friends Gen and Sean got married in Yosemite over Memorial Day weekend so Clarke and I decided to make a little vacation out of it. After leaving Harley with friends, we drove up on Wednesday, met up for dinner with some friends who happened to be passing through Yosemite on their way to the Strawberry Music Festival and checked into our canvas-walled tent in Camp Curry.

The canvas tents are great! It’s pretty similar to the car camping we do in Santa Barbara, except that you don’t have to set up the tent and you get a real bed. Oh, and you have to keep anything with a scent in the bear boxes. That was something new for me.

Thursday we were on our own with little to no agenda. We hiked around Mirror Lake

Mirror Lake

Mirror Lake

Or almost all the way around; there was a landslide in 2009 that closed a portion of the trail so we did a long out and back. I took it slow and easy since I wasn’t sure how I’d do on the 5+ mile hike at elevation (a whopping 4000 feet, but hey, I’m a pregnant sea level gal). We had a nice lunch and nap along a quiet portion of the river…

Mama Bear was relaxing under Baby Bear’s tree, but eventually she got up to look for a snack. About two dozen people had gathered by that point. Mama Bear crusised around her side of the trail for a while before deciding that more tasty options were to be found across the trail (where we were all standing). We quickly (without running) headed back up along the trail and left Mama Bear to her lunch.

On Thursday, Clarke wanted to hike up to Glacier Point via the Four Mile Trail. This was not a hike for me. Four miles it may be, but it goes from the valley floor to the top in those four short miles. Clarke took off early that morning and made it up three of the four miles before he discovered a closed sign. He and his new hiking buddy (someone he met on the trail) decided to finish the hike since they were closer to the top than the bottom and hoped to get a ride down on the shuttle. The ranger at the top of the trail wasn’t too happy with them for hiking up the closed trail but didn’t prevent them from hiking back down (no room on the shuttles).

While Clarke was busy scaling mountains, I opted for a shorter and not as steep hike up to Vernal Falls. A very popular trail, it was full of people but not too crowded. I plodded along at my own pace while the river rushed and roared alongside the trail.

Thursday evening was the non-rehearsal rehearsal dinner at the Yosemite Lodge. It was fun to visit and catch up with everyone, including the bride and groom, before the big day. And bonus for us, Clarke and I took showers before dinner so we were presentable.

The wedding was Friday afternoon, but we took the morning to see Yosemite Falls. I took the shuttle and Clarke took his bike to get there then we walked the lower loop trail. One of the rangers told us that Yosemite was having record-breaking water this year, 200% normal levels.

As we returned to camp to the clean up (two showers in two days for me, camping-schmamping), the rain began to fall. It continued on and off even after we arrived at the Awahnee for the wedding.

They decided the rain wasn’t going to let up so the wedding moved into a rocky alcove of the Awahnee. It was a beautiful and simple ceremony. Gen and Sean wrote their own vows which were so sweet and so them, it was great.

The reception was immediately afterwards inside the hotel with plenty of drinks, food, music, dancing, trivia game, and plenty good times until 10pm when we caught the last shuttle back to Camp Curry.

It continued to rain all Saturday night but we were nice and dry in our canvas tent. And the best part, we didn’t have a wet tent to pack up the next morning. It was cold and rainy in the valley all night and we awoke to a nice dusting of snow on the valley peaks. We packed up and headed out while it seemed everyone else was heading into the valley.

Recovering from a great event

May 1st finally arrived and with it the first annual Ikuna Koa Keiki Klassic Regatta and Ho’olaule’a. My Aloha Designs booth did well, I even managed to make some money! Ka Lei Aloha O Hula had a great performance, including two new students. I took Monday off to recover, unpack, and sleep in (not in that order). The whole event was successful and they’re already talking about doing it again next year.

Spice cabinet

You’ll remember that I got an iPhone a few weeks ago. I discovered a very easy and wonderful use for it this week. I created a note listing all of the items in my spice cabinet. I didn’t bother listing the amounts I have (that may come back to bite me at a later date but oh well). Now whenever I’m at the store and think I need a spice I can check my list. So I won’t come home with yet another jar of cumin. Again.

Busy as a bee in Spring

Life has been pretty busy…hula, paddling, work, sewing, repeat. Ikuna Koa is hosting the Ikuna Koa Keiki Klassic Regatta on May 1st. I’ve got three parts to play for this event 1) hula dancer – my halau Ka Lei Aloha O Hula is performing, 2) vendor – Aloha Designs has a booth there, and 3) Ikuna Koa member – since I officially joined the canoe club this year. Needless to say there has been a lot of prep work going on in the past few weeks. And on top of that, Aloha Designs has been quite busy this month. I’ve gotten a record number of “cold calls” (well, cold emails) from people ordering items after finding my website by searching for Hawaiian garment bags, paddle bags, hula bags, ipu heke bags, and ribbon lei. To help with that I purchased a serger a few weeks ago and have been transitioning a lot of my patterns to work with my new toy. It has made me more efficient (now that I’ve learned how to use it) and I think it has improved the quality of my products as well. So that’s been my life recently. Busy and loving it.
