Isn’t she lovely?

She finally arrived! I’ve named her Poni (poni is purple in Hawaiian, plus now I can say I’m going to ride my Poni). I got a call from Uncle John (of Trueline Custom Surfboards) on Thursday night letting me know my SUP would be ready either Friday night or Saturday morning. I kept myself busy sewing on Friday night (an aloha twist on the Emmeline Apron for Aloha Designs) but by Saturday morning I was itching to get my hands on that board. Since they live down the street from us, I decided to swing by after breakfast on Saturday and see if my board was ready. It was! John’s wife Lena had been about to give me a call when I pulled into their driveway. We loaded it onto the RAV and I went home to await a call from Erin to plan our SUP for the day.

Erin and I met up at Santa Clara Point and managed to get the last two parking spots in the place. Seriously, in January. I love San Diego! We took off and made our way around the curve towards the Catamaran and toodled around for a while before making our way back into the launching bay. Erin took a turn on my SUP and managed to christen it properly by falling in the cold cold water.

We’ve found a spot for Poni in the garage on the big surfboard rack (not to be confused with the shortboard racks which holds the boards that are short enough to be vertical in the garage). Unfortunately, to make room for Poni we had to oust Big Red to a spot along the back fence in the shade of our avocado tree. Poor Big Red. Big Red is the first board Clarke and I bought together and he’s been through some rough times, some of which were our fault, some were the result of a bad ding-repair job. You can just barely see the nose of Big Red in the first picture above, all yellowed and loved up. Big Red still gets ridden sometimes, but since he’s already beaten up, he gets the honor of hanging out in the backyard.

After carrying the big red SUP of Unlce John’s for the past several months, my SUP was like carrying a beach ball instead of a bowling ball. I love that she is so light but sturdy. I had asked for a purple glittery board, but glitter was not possible (boo). The airbrush paint job is beautiful; just the right color purple (I was very specific, no grape jelly purple for me!). I had a set of four plugs put in the top of the board so I can strap down stuff (in a dry bag) on long paddle journeys. Or maybe Harley, he hasn’t heard about this yet though. My paddle already has a bag but I still need one for my board to prevent scratches and dings and delamination (the worst fate for a board).
