My Emmeline Apron

I finished my Emmeline apron in record time (for me).  It has been done a little over a week now, I just hadn’t found time to take a picture of it yet; mostly because I always looked like crap.  The pattern was easy to use, very straight-forward with good directions and illustrations.  The only tricky part was lining up the ties.  I was sure I wasn’t the only one having this problem so I did a few Google searches and came across make me studio’s tip to make attaching the ties easier.

I varied from the pattern in two spots. One was to add pockets, cause every apron needs a good pocket (or four). I had intended to have pockets from the beginning, but I was so excited to work on it one night that I just blazed right through following the instructions and went one step too far.  So the next night I grabbed my seam ripper and undid a bunch of stitches and then added the pockets and continued on. I love pockets where the print lines up with the background. The autumn leaves fabric was a bit more difficult since the leaves are so tiny and the pattern so varied, but I think I made it work ok. The pockets are lined with the same green fabric, inspired by angry chicken’s pocket patterns/instructions from Bend the Rules Sewing. I don’t think it would have occurred to me to make the pockets stand alone items. It is so much easier to sew them on without having to turn under the edges, espcially the rounded bits.

The other variation was to make the strap around the neck just one strap instead of two that you tie. The less going on under the back of my long hair, the better. I did take the time to make the straps on the bias and to do the hand sewing recommended by the pattern. My hand sewing is getting better with every project. There is something relaxing about it, as long as I’m not in a hurry. It’s so pretty I don’t want to get it dirty. But, I’m proud to say that I’ve actually started using it, not just leaving it hanging as a decoration in my kitchen. It will make it’s public debut on Thanksgiving at Paula’s house and then again for a few Christmas celebrations at our place.
